چکیده

The envelope process is a useful analytical tool which is often used to study wave groups. Most research on statistical properties of the envelope, and thus of wave groups, was focused on one dimensional records. However for the marine application, an appropriate concept should be two dimensional in space and variable in time. Although a generalization to higher dimensions was introduced by Adler (1978), little work was done to investigate its features. Since the envelope is not defined uniquely and its properties depend on a chosen version, we discuss the definition of the envelope field for a two dimensional random field evolving in time which serves as a model of irregular sea surface. Assuming Gaussian distribution of this field we derive sampling properties of the height of the envelope field as well as of its velocity. The latter is important as the velocity of the envelope is related to the rate at which energy is transported by propagating waves. We also study how statistical distributions of group waves differ from the corresponding ones for individual waves and how a choice of a version of the envelope affects its sampling distributions. Analyzing the latter problem helps in determination of the version which is appropriate in an application in hand. NOMENCLATURE Envelope field evaluated at a position and a time instant . Assessing Chlorophyll-a in the Southwestern Coastal Waters of the Caspian Sea

Caspian Sea with an average depth of 27m is the largest enclosed water body in the world. Despite its enormity and valuable biotic and economic resources, investigations on the biota and seawater properties are mosaic at best. In previous studies, the monitoring of the chlorophyll-a concentrations in the Southern Caspian Sea was organized based on satellite data sets however, vertical dis...

Effects of intense laser pulse properties on wake field acceleration in magnetized plasma: Half-Sine Shape (HSS) and Gaussian Shape (GS) pulses

In this paper, we have simulated the excitation of wake fields in the interaction of an intensive laser pulses having Half-Sine and Gaussian time envelopes with a fully ionized cold plasma using particle in cell (PIC) method. We investigated the dependency of wake filed amplitude to different laser and plasma parameters such as laser wavelength, pulse duration and electron number density. In ad...

Geometrical Characteristics of Gaussian Sea Waves

In this work, we study some geometrical properties of a stationary Gaussian field modeling the sea surface, using the energy spectrum. We consider the length of a crest and the mean speed of contours, which can be expressed as integrals over level sets. We also give central limit theorems for some of these quantities, using chaos expansions.

Seasonal Variations of Seawater Properties in the Southwestern Coastal Waters of the Caspian Sea

Seasonal variations of the seawater properties (e.g. temperature, salinity, density and chlorophyll-a) in western part of the southern coastal waters of the Caspian Sea near the Iranian coast were studied. A portable CTD probe was applied for profiling from sea surface to bottom at 23 stations. Maximum depth of the profiling stations was more than 470 m in the study area. Vertical structure of ...

Importance of the sea surface curvature to interpret the normalized radar cross section

Asymptotic models (small perturbation and small slope approximation at first-order, Kirchhoff approximation or two-scale model) used to predict the normalized radar cross section of the sea surface generally fail to reproduce in detail backscatter radar measurements. In particular, the predicted polarization ratio versus incidence and azimuth angles is not in agreement with experimental data. T...
